General
Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a radio technology for GSM
(Global System for mobile Communication) networks which increases
functionality offering the possibility of charge by amount
of data sent rather than connect time. It allows for continuous
connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users.
GPRS
is very popular with small and large businesses around the
world due so called ‘always online’ technology
meaning users can access their e-mails whenever and wherever
they want. Devices which make use of GPRS technology include
mobile phones, Laptop computers, PDA’s.
As
with all portable devices it is a requirement that the operational
time when running from a battery pack is as long as possible.
With such handheld devices becoming more complex and even
more powerful, the power demands from such devices are also
increasing; meaning battery manufacturers are constantly being
pressed to develop battery technology to get the best out
of new technologies.
The
development of Lithium technology has meant that batteries
have been developed that not only can cope with the high current
demands of such devices, but it has also meant that such batteries
can be made to be small enough to enable portable devices
to remain portable i.e. fit in your pocket.
